Winery Review: Very fresh aromas and citrus, lemon and grapefruit, fern and coriander notes. Fruity and pleasantly dry mouth, with an alcohol content perfectly managed and long pulpy smoked feeling.
My Review: This is the most expensive bottle of wine I've ever purchased. $105 CAD, or roughly $80 ish US. This is also the first time I've bought a full bottle of wine with dinner. Looking it up online however, this bottle costs $22 US. Oh the markup of restaurants! The restaurant had a pretty extensive wine list. I was a bit overwhelmed at first, but then tried to think through all the lessons I've read so far. I picked out my food first, and then selected a wine I thought would go well. Since sushi was on the menu, I wanted something light. I went with this old world chardonnay. It was very crisp and had a very light aroma. It finished with a delicious lemon custard smell. This was one of those wines whos smell matched its taste. It was light and crisp and had a lemon zing. It was phenomenal!!! I could have drank the whole bottle without any food. The first course of dinner was deep fried spot prawns with a spicy harissa sauce on top. The wine added an acidity that complimented the sauce extremely well. The next course was the sushi. There were five different types. My favorite was the prawns (noticing a trend here) that had been seared on the grill adding a smoky flavor and then had a white sauce they added to the top. It was sprinkled with lime zest to add that little extra yum. The wine and the sushi.....best...damn...thing....ever!!!! The acidic edge was taken off the wine, but it still wasn't sweet. This combination was pure perfection! My mouth is watering now just thinking about it. The last course was dessert. I had a matcha opera cake. It was not overly sweet and had a smoky element to it from the matcha. However, the wine was super bitter when drinking it after the dessert. I had to take a break from it and finish up my glass after a few sips of water. This wine was so so good. I will be looking for it in the states at the local wine store for sure. And I'm super excited that I can buy 4 bottles for the price I paid for this one!
